Setting Up Guest WiFi: Benefits and Steps Explained Simply

"What's the WiFi password?" – If you regularly host guests at home, you've probably heard this question before. Perhaps you even run a café or rent out a vacation apartment? By setting up a guest WiFi, you make it as comfortable as possible for your guests.

What is a Guest WiFi?

A Guest WiFi is a separate, isolated internet access with limited functionality in your network. It runs over the same router but uses its own IP address. Friends and guests of the house can comfortably use the internet without having access to the actual network environment and the associated devices.

Especially with regular visitors, a guest access is extremely useful. In terms of comfort and security , it offers differences compared to the standard WiFi – providing clear advantages for both you as the host and your valued guests. What these advantages are and how to make the most of your Guest WiFi will be discussed in the following lines.

What are the advantages of a guest WiFi?

1. Security

When you set up a guest WiFi, it increases the security of your entire home network. Your guests can access the internet, but not the router configuration, shared folders, printers, or other parts of the network. In the worst-case scenario, if malware is present on a guest's smartphone, it cannot easily spread to your home network and infect other devices.

In short: Your guests can use the WiFi without potentially jeopardizing the data archive containing family photos, confidential home office documents, or other aspects of your home network.

2. Convenience

With a guest network, you do not have to share your private WiFi password and simultaneously simplify the login process for your guests. This way, you can keep the main password as secure as possible without overwhelming your visitors with confusing, 20-character alphanumeric strings after dessert.

Our Tip: The login process for guests is particularly easy via a QR code, which can be generated by some router models and WiFi extenders from devolo

3. Control

If you want to be very precise, you can even specify which websites guests can visit through your WiFi – or rather, which they cannot. You often also have the option to assign maximum bandwidths to your primary and guest WiFi. This way, you can limit the speed at which your guests browse if they might otherwise overload the network.

Who is liable for a WiFi guest access?

More relevant for hotels, vacation rentals, cafés, and other (semi-)public WiFi environments, but also not to be completely overlooked by private users, is the question of liability . Do you, as the operator of a guest WiFi, have to take responsibility if a guest misuses your internet access (knowingly or unknowingly) for dubious purposes?

The good news: No, you don't have to officially. As reported by the Consumer Center, the so-called liability for WLAN operators has been legally abolished since 2017. Legally, entrepreneurs and private individuals who provide their WiFi to others are not liable for any (copyright) infringements, such as illegal file sharing on the internet.

The risk of a guest WiFi is therefore low, but you cannot be completely absolved of responsibility: If repeated violations of intellectual property occur from your home network, the respective rights holder may require you to implement technical measures such as blocking certain URLs, IP addresses, and ports in the router settings to restrict access to unauthorized content.

Setting Up Guest WiFi: Basic Steps and Tips

Many routers offer the option to set up a WiFi network for guests. The exact procedure depends on your router model or internet provider, but the following basic steps should guide you to your goal.

If guest access cannot be found in either the app or the router menu, your router model probably does not support the desired function. In this case, you can use a Wi-Fi amplifier in conjunction with the convenient Home Network App from devolo to set up guest Wi-Fi with ease.

All devices in a home network share a limited bandwidth – and you can manage how this is distributed in the configuration menu of many routers. Don't want your children's online games to interfere with your guests' data stream? Or, conversely, don't want your guests to slow down your entire home network with data-intensive streaming or similar applications?

You can then set appropriate priorities in the distribution of bandwidth in favour of certain users and applications. Depending on the router model, you can set it so that the home office has more bandwidth available than entertainment. Or the main network has more bandwidth than the guest Wi-Fi.

Most router apps and configuration menus provide an overview of network users who have previously logged into your Wi-Fi. Have you ever shared your internet access with your upstairs neighbour, who is now (consciously or unconsciously) still stealing your bandwidth? If so, you can kick the unwanted user off the network so that more bandwidth is available for you and your guests.

Speaking of guests: you can also kindly but firmly remove them from the main network and recommend that they use the login details for the newly set up guest Wi-Fi network on their next visit.

Are you expecting children to visit? Then you can monitor your guest Wi-Fi access and (usually) activate parental controls in your router menu in advance to block websites of certain categories (such as adult entertainment). You can also limit the guest Wi-Fi to certain times of the day and only allow internet access at certain times. Or even block specific URLs if you want to keep a particularly close eye on your little (or big) guests' internet usage.

Want to make your guests as comfortable as possible? Perhaps you even have space for a guest room? Then ideally you should also ensure that your visitors have strong Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. To do this, you can follow our basic tips for eliminating Wi-Fi weaknesses, set up an additional access point or – the simplest and most elegant solution – use our powerline technologyto bring Wi-Fi directly to the guest room.
