The Project
The joint project "Trusted Blockchains for the Open, Intelligent Energy Network of the Future" (tbiEnergy) explores how a blockchain-supported, local energy trading system can be established for end consumers.
The goal of the tbiEnergy project is to demonstrate how even small producers can easily and locally trade energy. Through the added-value service approach of the Smart Meter Gateway, users can, for example, market virtual goods and services locally using blockchain technology with so-called smart contracts.
- A simple scenario is the sale of energy from solar panels to the immediate neighborhood.
- More complex scenarios involving energy storage, flexibility options such as heat pumps, hot water storage, and other market items are also conceivable.
For such application scenarios, new blockchain solutions need to be developed, as existing ones are not designed for the specifics of the German energy market.
A key focus of the project is a stringent hardware security concept in conjunction with the Smart Meter Gateway. By using cryptographic blockchain technology in direct combination with hardware-secured IoT devices or Smart Meter Gateways, third-party influence is intended to be prevented.
