Client Steering – Brief definition

In the case of multiple overlapping WiFi networks, the WiFi device (client) automatically switches to the stronger network as needed. The decision to switch networks is made by the WiFi device as soon as a defined threshold is breached.

With several WiFi Access Points distributed across the living area, the best WiFi connection is not always guaranteed depending on the device's location. For example, a smartphone may still be connected to the router network, even though it could have switched to the possibly closer repeater long ago. This is where Client Steering comes into play.

What is Client Steering?

Through the Client Steering feature, the WiFi device automatically switches to the stronger network when needed. This occurs as soon as the client's data flow falls below a defined threshold.

Unlike Access Point Steering, Client Steering does not involve intelligent overall coordination of all devices within the home network.
