Airtime Fairness – Brief definition

In WiFi networks with many devices, these compete for the available transmission time. Airtime Fairness ensures that in this situation, faster devices have priority and are not slowed down by slower WiFi devices.

Typically, a home network supplies numerous devices with internet access, some of which may be active simultaneously. These various clients compete for the available transmission time. An Access Point sends data in turn to the active devices, regardless of the transmission time each one requires. Since older clients—or those with a poor connection—may take longer, all other clients must wait until it's their turn again. This is where airtime fairness comes into play.

What is Airtime Fairness?

Airtime Fairness ensures an efficient use of the available transmission time. The feature detects when a device can complete data transmission in a short period and thus gives priority to faster devices.

Slower, often older devices that, for example, require a lot of time for a download no longer slow down the entire WiFi home network. Overall efficiency increases and modern, fast devices can fully utilize their speed advantages.
