Access Point Steering – Short definition

Through Access Point Steering, WiFi access points in the home network ensure that all devices are always connected to the strongest available access point – without interruptions and fully automatically.

In many WiFi networks, devices autonomously determine which network to connect to. Particularly older smartphones, tablets, and similar devices cling to their WiFi access point (Access Point, router, devolo device) until the signal drops – only then do they switch to a WiFi access point with better reception. Access Point Steering accelerates this process.

What is Access Point Steering?

The feature Access Point Steering enhances your WiFi access point with intelligent network optimization. It actively assists your devices in connecting to the optimal access point in the network. To achieve this, all existing Access Points (e.g., powerline WiFi adapters or repeaters) continuously share information about the connection quality of the WiFi clients.

In this way, they coordinate which WiFi access point currently offers the best connection for the end devices and redirect them if necessary by blocking their connection requests or suggesting which base station they should connect to for optimal performance.
